BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 30th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will begin play at the 2016 ITA Kickoff Weekend this Saturday, January 23rd at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. The Hokies will take on No. 58 Illinois on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET before Sunday’s match with either No. 17 Texas Tech or No. 60 Oregon.
No. 30 Virginia Tech (2-0) is coming off a doubleheader with Radford and Western Carolina in Blacksburg last weekend that ended in two convincing Tech victories to start off the Spring. The Hokies outscored their opponents 13-1 on the weekend. No. 104 Ilinca Stoica, Francesca Fusinato, Elena Cerezo-Codina, No. 108 Caroline Daxhelet, Sansitha Nandakumar, Katherine Butler, Raluca Mita and Kelly Williford all recorded one or more singles victories over the course of the two matches.
No. 58 Illinois (2-0) kicked off their season with a pair of 7-0 victories over IUPUI and Eastern Illinois last weekend. The Illini are led by 114th-ranked Jericka Boone, who went 2-0 last weekend to start off the year.
No. 17 Texas Tech, led by 77th-ranked Gabriella Talaba, is hosting the ITA Kickoff for their first non-exhibition matches of the season. The Red Raiders lost to No. 1 USC in the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament last season, the same team that knocked the Hokies out of the tournament just a game before,
Oregon comes into the weekend ranked 60th after a successful opening weekend at the Long Beach Invitational. Nia Rose, who picked up her first win of the season on Sunday, occupies the 1 spot for the Ducks.
