Tech continues success on day two of USTA Clay Court Invitational
Several Hokies earn spots in Saturday's quarterfinal matches

ORLANDO – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team continued built on their day 1 success with another stellar day at the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando on Friday.

In the Gold singles flight, Ilinca Stoica eliminated Troy’s Jiayuan Xue 6-3, 6-3 to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals. Elena Cerezo-Codina, also in the Gold flight, lost a three-set battle with Daneika Borthwick of Florida State in her round of 16 tilt.

In the Garnet flight, Caroline Daxhelet earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 win over Julia Ascua of Florida Gulf Coast in the round of 16. Raluca Mita followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Troy’s Efrilya Herlina of Troy to join Daxhelet in the Garnet quarterfinals.

In the White draw, Sansitha Nandakumar took a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision over Marijana Novakovic of Old Dominion in the round of 16, earning her a spot in the quarterfinals. Kelly Williford will join Nandakumar in the White quarterfinals after a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Old Dominion’s Ivana Vukovic. Katherine Butler battled but lost her match to Tayla Stenta of North Carolina Central in her round of 16 match.

In doubles action, Mita and Williford took care of Meszarosova and Valkova from South Alabama in the Gold doubles draw 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the Garnet draw, Butler and Nandakumar also advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals after an 8-2 victory over Troy’s Ferrauti and Melicharkova.
