BLACKSBURG, Va. – Caroline Daxhelet won two more singles matches on Sunday to earn a spot in the singles championship match at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg.
Daxhelet’s quarterfinal match came against Virginia’s Victoria Olivarez, one of three quarterfinal matches that pitted Virginia Tech against rival Virginia. She fell 2-6 in the first set, but stormed back to win the match in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to move on to the semifinals.
Natalia Vlasova of Old Dominion was Daxhelet’s challenger in the semifinals. Daxhelet edged out a 7-6(1) victory in the first set before falling in the second 7-5 to set up a decisive third set. It was all Daxhelet in the third set as she went on to win it 6-0, claiming the match and a spot in Monday’s championship match.
Elena Cerezo-Codina and Francesca Fusinato were also in action Sunday in the quarterfinals, but both fell to their opponents from Virginia and were eliminated.
Monday’s championship match will feature Daxhelet against Julia Elbaba of Virginia, the 3rd-ranked player in the country. The match is set for 10:00 a.m. and can be followed via live stats here.
