BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team had three players advance to Sunday’s quarterfinals after an impressive showing on Saturday at the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Lynchburg.
Elena Cerezo-Codina took care of Duquesne’s Kylie Isaacs 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 32 before defeating Virginia’s Maci Epstein in a three-set battle (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) to land a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinals. There, she will face the third-ranked player in the country in Virginia’s Julia Elbaba.
Francesca Fusinato had no trouble with Erica Susi of Virginia in the round of 32, winning 6-0, 6-4 to move on to face Ingrid Vojcinakova of Old Dominion. She stayed hot and swept the match 6-0, 6-0 to earn her spot in the quarterfinals against Skylar Morton, also of Virginia.
The Hokies weren’t done yet as Caroline Daxhelet won both of her matches as well, making her the third Tech player to reach the quarterfinals. She won a three-set 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 match over Virginia’s Meghan Kelley before beating Maria Siopacha of UMBC 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16. Victoria Olivarez, once again from Virginia, awaits Daxhelet on Sunday.
The regional has shaped up into a bit of rivalry weekend as Tech and Virginia each have three out of the eight total players left in the singles main draw.
