BLACKSBURG, Va. – Five members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team recorded victories in the opening round of the singles main draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg on Friday. In addition, multiple Tech duos advanced to the round of 16 in doubles, with one team moving on to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Elena Cerezo-Codina got the Hokies started off on the right track with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marshall’s Jackie Carr, followed by Francesca Fusinato taking care of Habiba Shaker from West Virginia, 6-4, 6-4. Caroline Daxhelet was kept Tech rolling with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Delaware’s Arielle Shuren for the Hokies’ third win of the afternoon. Kelly Williford notched Tech’s second victory over an opponent from West Virginia by defeating Hailey Barrett 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 before Katherine Butler capped off the day with her third victory of the regional, taking down VCU’s Anna Rasmussen 6-4, 6-2.
Two rounds of main draw doubles were played Friday in addition to the round of singles. In the round of 32, Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet rolled past Pittsburgh’s Carina Ma and Natsumi Okamoto 8-4 after receiving a first round bye. Raluca Mita and Ilinca Stoica both fell in singles play today but had no trouble with Norfolk State’s Dajana Cvjetkovic and Liza Gordeeva, beating them 8-1 to advance. Both duos ended up falling in the round of 16.
Fusinato and Williford won their round of 32 match 8-3 over Decamps and Radosavljevic of George Washington to earn a spot in the round of 16. There, they stayed hot and kept the Hokies alive in doubles play with an 8-2 win over Katia Blik and Devan McCluskey of Penn State to secure a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
Two round of singles and a round of doubles are scheduled for Saturday. All five Hokies who recorded wins in singles today will be in action as well as the doubles team in the quarterfinals. Live results will be available here.
