Hokies open up play at ITA Atlantic Regional
Butler, Nandakumar pick up wins on the day

BLACKSBURG, Va – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team kicked off the 2015 edition of the ITA Atlantic Regional on Thursday at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Today’s action consisted of two qualifying singles rounds and one main draw doubles round.

In the qualifying round of 32, Sansitha Nandakumar defeated Penn State’s Jacqueline Zuhse by a score of 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. There, she fell to Pittburgh’s Callie Frey in two sets.

Katherine Butler took down Maryland’s Caroline Williams in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in the round of 32 to begin her day. In the round of 16, she eliminated Kimmy Herrock of James Madison 6-4, 7-5 to advance to tomorrows qualifying singles quarterfinals.

Butler and Nandakumar also teamed up for a 8-4 doubles main draw victory over Cecillia Lynham and Sophia Barnard of Georgetown. They’ll advance to tomorrow’s round of 32 along with several Hokie duos who received first round byes.
