BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team kicked off the 2015 Hokie Invite on Friday in impressive fashion, finishing 7-2 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles as a team.

The day began with two rounds of doubles across three flights. In the Orange draw, Katherine Butler and Kelly Williford teamed up to take down Morehead State’s Hayley Wild and Ayaki Terashi by a score 6-3 to move on to the second round, where they fell to VCU’s Anna Rasmussen and Yana Morar.

Raluca Mita and Ilinca Stoica had a first round bye before taking care of business in a second round victory over Katherine Whiteaway and Jacqueline Zuhse from Penn State.

Caroline Daxhelet and Sansitha Nandakumar breezed through the maroon flight, first defeating Radford’s Claire Nguyen and Meilli Martin 6-0 in the first round before taking down Towson’s Lucy Williams and Yevgeniya Shusterman in the second round, 6-1. Mita/Stoica and Daxhelet/Nandakumar will both compete in third round doubles action on Saturday.

Several Tech players picked up first round wins in singles play on Friday. Mita stayed hot with a 7-6 (7), 2-6, 10-7 win over Zuhse in the Brotherhood flight while Daxhelet cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Rasmussen in the Ut Prosim group. Williford edged out a 2-6, 6-4 (11-9) win in the Honor flight over Wofford’s Cassidy Hicks.

Katherine Butler picked up a solid 6-1, 6-1 victory over Morehead State’s Zina Mehikic in the Leadership flight before Nandakumar took care of Wofford’s Lauren Reid in the Sacrifice flight by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Emily Pence earned her first collegiate victory by a score of 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) (7-10) after a long battle with Barbora Vasilkova of Towson.

Frances Peyton rounded out the day with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Hannah Kratky of Penn State, the Hokies’ seventh singles win of the day.

All Hokies who won in singles competition today will advance to Saturday’s second round. Play begins with one round of doubles at 9 A.M. on Saturday, immediately followed by the second round of singles at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
