ITA announces 2015 preseason rankings and All-American selections
Multiple Hokies earn early season honors

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Three members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team have earned a spot in the ITA Preseason Top 125, as announced by the ITA on Tuesday. Ilinca Stoica, Francesca Fusinato and Elena Cerezo-Codina return to the rankings after all three finished the year ranked last season. In addition, these three and more have been selected to participate in the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship.

Stoica, a senior, finished 60th in the final 2014 rankings after a stellar season out of the 1 spot for Tech. She tallied several impressive victories, including one over then-No. 4 Julia Elbaba of Virginia. She also earned a victory in the Hokies’ NCAA Tournament victory over Long Beach State and earned a spot on the All-ACC Second Team. She’ll enter this season ranked 41st and has been tabbed by the ITA as a player to watch in the Atlantic region.

Fusinato is currently 44th in the rankings after finishing 63rd last season. An impressive year that included a selection to participate in the NCAA Singles Championship (just the second player in program history to do so) earned Fusinato an All-ACC Second Team spot with Stoica. Among several other solid victories, she led the upset against No. 16 Miami with a dramatic three-set win over then-No. 6 Stephanie Wagner to seal the deal.

Cerezo-Codina comes in ranked at No. 79 after finishing 109th last season. Multiple victories over ranked opponents highlighted Cerezo-Codina’s season as well as match-clinching victories in both the ACC Tournament and the Hokies’ NCAA Tournament victory. Her dramatic ACC Tournament win sent Tech to the ACC Quarterfinals for the first time since the program joined the conference in 2004.

In addition to the rankings, the ITA announced who will be participating in the 2015 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Malibu, California in October. Stoica and Fusinato will be playing in the singles qualifying portion of the tournament, with Cerezo-Codina listed as an alternate. Cerez-Codina has a spot locked in the pre-qualifying singles competition, along with Caroline Daxhelet who made the alternate list. Fusinato and Cerezo-Codina were also selected as a duo to play in the doubles pre-qualifying competition.

The Hokies will be in action as a team next beginning on Friday, September 25th and lasting through the weekend as they host Hokie Fall Invite at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
