BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team came in at No. 30 in the final ITA rankings of the season, marking the highest that the team has ever finished in program history and the highest overall ranking that the team has ever earned. The Hokies jumped two spots from No. 32 in the previous poll after winning their first road NCAA Tournament game in school history over Long Beach State and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships for just the second time.
Tech finished 17-10 overall, notching a 7-7 record in the always-competitive ACC. In addition to the team ranking, three Hokies finished ranked in the ITA Top 125 in singles.
Ilinca Stoica finished at No. 60 after representing the Hokies out of the 1 spot for most of the season. Stoica earned a spot on the All ACC Second Team honors and was tabbed as the ITA Atlantic Region’s Player to Watch for next season. She topped four nationally ranked opponents on the season, including then-No. 4 Julia Elbaba of Virginia.
Francesca Fusinato finished 63rd after representing the Hokies in the NCAA Singles Championship. She was just the second player in program history to earn a spot in the individual tournament. Her match clinching three-set win over then-No. 6 Stephanie Wagner of Miami back in March marked a landmark victory for the program. Fusinato joined Stoica on the All ACC Second Team as well.
Elena Cerezo-Codina lead the Hokies in wins with 17 and finished 109th in the final ITA poll. She became a reliable staple for Tech throughout the season, mainly out of the 3 spot, notching multiple wins over ranked opponents. She finished the season 8-2 in her final 10 matches.
Newcomers Katherine Butler and Caroline Daxhelet had impressive seasons as well. Butler went 11-4, finishing her last 10 matches of the season with a 7-3 mark. Daxhelet went 12-6 for Tech and often provided a spark for the Hokies when they needed it.
Kelly Williford and Sansitha Nandakumar both finished with winning records as well, adding to a strong Hokie lineup and providing wins out of the 4, 5, and 6 spots. Raluca Mita contributed 5 wins in singles and also anchored a 7-4 doubles team with Fusinato.
The team will not be graduating any seniors and looks to come back and build on this historic season beginning in the Fall.
