WACO, Texas – Francesca Fusinato is set to represent the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team at the 2015 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship, beginning with a first round match against UCLA’s 33rd-ranked Catherine Harrison at 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The 64-team tournament will span from May 20-25 at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Fusinato becomes the second player in Virginia Tech women’s tennis history to be selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship and second under current head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. She earned All-ACC Second Team honors this season while boasting a 14-8 singles record (13-8 out of No. 2 spot). Fusinato took down multiple ranked opponents this season, including a win over then-No. 6 Stephanie Wagner of Miami to clinch a milestone victory for Tech. Her 6-4, 6-2 victory out of the No. 2 spot helped the Hokies win their first round NCAA Tournament match against Long Beach State back on May 10. Fusinato is also undefeated in three-set matches this season, going a perfect 5-0.
Catherine Harrison is ranked 33rd in the country and is 28-7 overall in singles play on the year. She went a perfect 10-0 in the Pac-12 this season, playing mostly out of the No. 3 and No. 4 spot for the Bruins.
The winner of the match will move on to Thursday’s second round to face the winner of the match between Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte and LSU’s Joana Vale Costa.
