LOS ANGELES – The 32nd-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated 38th-ranked Long Beach State by a score of 4-2 in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Championship on Saturday in Los Angeles. The victory marks the second NCAA Tournament win in program history (first came in 1999) and the first ever NCAA Tournament road win for the Hokies. Tech moves to 17-9 overall on the season with the win.

The first victory of the day came when Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford defeated Long Beach State’s Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa 8-5 on court 3. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Francesca Fusinato clinched the doubles point for Tech by edging out a 8-7 (5) win on court 2 over Laura Eales and Karolina Rozenberg. Raluca Mita and Ilinca Stoica were locked in a 7-7 battle on court 1 before the point was clinched.

Long Beach State (18-6) tied the score at 1-1 after a court 5 victory, but No. 51 Fusinato reclaimed the lead for Tech with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ebba Unden on court 2. No. 65 Stoica then put the Hokies within one point of victory with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win on court 1 over Razakasoa to make it 3-1. Katherine Butler dropped a tough three-set match to Eales on court 6 to move the score to 3-2 in favor of Tech. From there, No. 100 Cerezo-Codina clinched the match by coming from behind in the tiebreaker to claim a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Gerard on court 3. Daxhelet also lead her match in the second set before the win was decided.

The win moves to Hokies to 2-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Tech reached the second round for the first time ever in 1999, but have never advanced to the third round. A win on Sunday would mark the furthest that the program has ever made it in the NCAA Tournament.

Tech’s victory lands them in a second round match with the winner of the tilt between No. 1 USC and Youngstown State, taking place on Saturday afternoon. The match will be at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday and live stats will be available here.
