Fusinato selected to play in NCAA Singles Championships
No. 46 Fusinato receives at-large bid, No. 65 Stoica selected as an alternate

INDIANAPOLIS – In addition to the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team competing as a unit in the 2015 NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament, Francesca Fusinato has been selected to participate in the singles tournament, hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas following the team competition. No. 46-ranked Francesca Fusinato was chosen as an at-large selection, while No. 65 Ilinca Stoica also has a chance to play, as she is one of eight alternates available in case any of the 64 competitors withdraw.

The singles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 15-19. All matches will be the best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches.

Fusinato and Stoica both earn this honor only a week after each being named to the All-ACC Second Team. The two have anchored the Hokies out of the 1 and 2 spots and played a large role in earning Tech its first NCAA Tournament bid as a team since 2000. Fusinato has been the Hokies’ highest-ranked player in the ITA polls for most of the season and remains in the top 50 at No. 46 as of the final regular season poll. A highlight of Tech’s season came when Fusinato beat then-No. 6 Stephanie Wagner to break a 3-3 tie and beat No. 16 Miami at home, a milestone win for the program. Stoica turned heads recently and possibly secured her spot as an alternate when she came storming back from a 0-6 first set loss to beat the nation’s fourth-ranked player, Julia Elbaba of Virginia, in three sets on April 18th.

In case you missed it, the Hokies’ first round NCAA Tournament match will take place in Los Angeles on May 9th against Big West champions Long Beach State.
