CARY, N.C. - The 39th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the nation and conference’s top ranked team, UNC, by a score of 4-0 in the ACC Championship quarterfinals in Cary, North Carolina on Friday.

Tech faced a tall task in taking on the Tar Heels. Doubles play began with Ilinca Stoica and Raluca Mita dropping an 8-3 decision on court 1 to No. 11-ranked duo of Jamie Loeb and Caroline Price. The doubles point was clinched for North Carolina when the 53rd-ranked team of Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle took down Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford on court 3, 8-2. On court 2, however, No. 79-ranked Elena Cerezo-Codina and Francesca Fusinato for the Hokies were winning 6-5 over 30th-ranked Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay before the point was clinched.

Singles play proved to be an equally difficult affair for the Hokies. Vialle beat Sansitha Nandakumar in two sets on court 5 to make it 2-0 in UNC’s favor before No. 95 Cerezo-Codina fell to No. 20 Price in the 3 spot. With the score 3-0, Daxhelet dropped 6-2, 6-2 decision to No. 112 Kay on court 4 to seal the win for North Carolina.

No. 63 Stoica’s match with No. 7 Loeb was left unfinished. Katherine Butler’s tilt with No. 115 Dai was also unfinished with Butler ahead in the second set. No. 46 Fusinato was ahead 4-2 in the second set of her match as well with No. 15 Carter before it was called.

The Hokies season will more than likely continue in the NCAA Tournament. With a No. 39 ranking and the dramatic ACC second round win over Boston College, Tech is certainly a strong candidate to make the field of 64, although nothing is certain yet. The Hokies have not made the NCAA tournament since 2000. The selection show will begin on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for updates as the field is announced.
