CARY, N.C. - The No. 9-seeded Virginia Tech women’s tennis team pulled off a dramatic 4-3 victory over 8-seeded Boston College on Thursday in the second round of the ACC Championship in Cary, North Carolina. The match, which took nearly five hours to complete, came down to a tiebreaker in the final set of the final singles match of the evening.

Doubles play was full of tightly contested affairs that saw the Hokies come out on top. Ilinca Stoica and Raluca Mita edged out the Eagles’ 60th-ranked duo of Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr on court 1, breaking a 7-7 tie to earn the 8-7 win. Courts 2 and 3 were nearly identical contests. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Francesca Fusinato’s match with Emily Safron and Kayta Vasilyev on court 2 was tied 7-7, while the court 3 matchup between Caroline Daxhelet/Kelly Williford and Wan-Yi Sweeting/Asiya Dair was knotted at 7-7 as well. Ultimately, the 79th-ranked team of Cerezo-Codina and Fusinato pulled it out, winning 8-7 and giving the Hokies a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

No. 63 Stoica’s match on court 1 with No. 76 Wacnik finished 6-3, 6-2 in Wacnik’s favor to tie the match at 1-1. Court 2 finished next, with No. 46 Fusinato falling to Borr, 7-5, 6-1. No. 95 Cerezo-Codina got the Hokies in the singles win column first with a 6-4. 3-6, 6-0 victory over No. 119 Dair on court 3. With the score tied 2-2, Katherine Butler battled but fell to Sweeting on court 6 by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Sansitha Nandakumar put the Hokies right back in it with a gutsy 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 win over Safron on court 5 to set up a deciding match on court 4.

With the score tied 3-3, all focus shifted Daxhelet and Vasilyev’s match. The two were duking it out in the third set to decide the match and to keep their teams’ ACC Tournament title hopes alive. About 4 hours and 30 minutes into the match, the two were tied in their final set, 6-6. In the most dramatic fashion possible, Daxhelet pulled it off, winning the tiebreaker and sending Tech to the ACC Tournament quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

Tech will hit the courts again on Friday at noon to take on the nation and conference’s top-seeded team, North Carolina (26-0, 14-0 ACC), in the quarterfinals. UNC won the regular season meeting between the teams back on March 1st. The Hokies have never met the Tar Heels in the postseason.
