CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 38 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to No. 12 Virginia in Charlottesville on Saturday by a score of 5-2. A pair of singles victories against high-ranked opponents, as well as a doubles win against a ranked duo highlighted the Hokies’ afternoon.

Tech (14-8, 6-7 ACC) started off the day on the right foot as Elena Cerezo-Codina and Francesca Fusinato took down Virginia’s No. 41-ranked duo of Cassie Mercer and Skylar Morton on court 2 by a score of 8-3. UVA (17-5, 10-3 ACC), however, went on to claim the next two doubles matches and take an early 1-0 lead.

Singles play started with Katherine Butler dropping her match on court 6, followed by No. 50 Fusinato falling to No. 22 Danielle Collins on court 2. Cassie Mercer defeated Kelly Williford on court 6 (7-6, 6-1) to give Virginia their fourth and match-clinching point.

The highlight of the match for the Hokies came when No. 85 Ilinca Stoica pulled off a huge upset over the No. 4 ranked player in the nation, Julia Elbaba. Stoica fought back after being blanked in the first set to win the next two sets 6-2. Elbaba, who had a record of 25-5 coming into the match, is the highest-ranked opponent that any player for Tech has knocked off this season.

The Hokies weren’t done pulling upsets, as Cerezo-Codina beat No. 30 Stephanie Nauta 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to make the final score 5-2.
