No. 34 Hokies suffer setback at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – The 34th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 36 Georgia Tech on Friday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta. The Hokies fall to 12-6 on the year (4-5 ACC) while Georgia Tech moves to 9-6 (6-3 ACC).

The 22nd-ranked duo of Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan for Georgia Tech lived up to their ranking as they set the tone for the match with a quick win on court 1 over Raluca Mita and Kelly Williford. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar could not hold off Johnisse Renaud and Rasheeda McAdoo on court 3, falling 8-3 and giving the Jackets the doubles point. Caroline Daxhelet and Francesca Fusinato were trailing by only a point on court 2 before their match was ended with the score sitting at 5-4.

Singles play begain with Nandakumar dropping her match to Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer on court 6 (6-1, 6-1), followed by Williford falling 6-1, 6-2 out of the 4 spot to Alexis Prokopuik.

No. 92 Renaud for the Jackets clinched the match out of the 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over 106th-ranked Ilinca Stoica. Court 2 saw another clash of ranked opponents, ending in a 6-0, 6-4 victory for Georgia Tech’s 70th-ranked Woodard over No. 86 Fusinato.

The remaining two matches were ended with tiebreakers, both going in the Jackets’ favor. Megan Kurey edged out Mita 7-6 (1), 2-6, 1-0 (5) on court 5, while Cerezo-Codina fell to Woodard 6-4, 7-6 (3) to wrap up the afternoon on court 3.

The Hokies have an opportunity to bounce back against another ranked conference opponent on Sunday when Notre Dame comes to Blacksburg. The match will start at noon, and live stats will be available here.
