BLACKSBURG – The No. 34-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team continues conference play this weekend with a trip to Georgia Tech and a home match against Notre Dame. The Friday match in Atlanta will have a 2 p.m. start time, and Sunday’s tilt with the Irish will begin at noon.
The Hokies (12-5, 4-4 ACC) are coming off a huge 4-3 win on Sunday against No. 16 Miami. Francesca Fusinato earned ACC Player of the Week honors for her dramatic victory over 6th-ranked Stephanie Wagner that clinched the match for Tech. Ilinca Stoica, Elena Cerezo-Codina, and Kelly Williford all picked up singles victories on the day as well. Tech also took care of VCU last Friday by a score of 6-1. The stellar weekend propelled the Hokies 13 spots in the ITA rankings, landing them at No. 34 this week.
36th-ranked Georgia Tech (8-6, 5-3 ACC) also had a strong weekend in conference play. They swept Wake Forest 7-0 before defeating No. 17 Duke in a 4-3 battle, giving the Blue Devils their first conference loss. The Yellow Jackets are led by No. 70 Paige Hourigan, as well as No. 92 Johnnise Renaud. They also boast the nation’s 22nd-ranked doubles team in Kendal Woodard and Hourigan.
No. 40 Notre Dame (12-6, 6-3 ACC) swept a pair of weekend matches as well, taking down ACC opponent N.C. State 6-1 before sweeping Marquette, 7-0. The Fighting Irish have won four of their last five matches and are led by Quinn Gleason out of the 1 spot.
