BLACKSBURG – The 47th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team edged out 16th-ranked Miami in a classic ACC battle at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Sunday. The Hokies (12-5, 4-4 ACC) handed the Hurricanes their first conference loss of the season with the win.

Miami (10-4, 7-1 ACC) came out of the gates firing, winning a pair of doubles matches and taking the point. The 29th-ranked duo of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno for the Hurricanes were too much for Raluca Mita and Kelly Williford on court 1, while court 2 saw Sinead Lohan and Stephanie Wagner get past Caroline Daxhelet and Francesca Fusinato.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 2-0 lead when No. 125 Lina Lileikite beat Daxhelet on court 4, but Elena Cerezo-Codina cut the deficit back down to one quickly with a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 63 Riobueno out of the 3 spot. No. 96 Wendy Zhang put Miami up 3-1 with a three-set victory over Mita on court 6, which proved to be the last win of the day for the Canes.

Williford took care of Silvia Fuentes 7-5, 6-4 on court 5 to get the Hokies back within one. From there, 106th-ranked Ilinca Stoica pulled off an impressive three-set win over No. 36 Lohan (4-6, 6-0, 6-3) to tie the match, 3-3.

It all came down to 86th-ranked Fusinato’s match on court 2 with the 6th-ranked player in the country, Miami’s Wagner. Fusinato took the first set 6-3, and nearly claimed the second one before falling, 7-5. The entire focus of the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center shifted to the match as it moved into the third set, where Fusinato finished off an impressive performance, winning 6-3 and clinching a big ACC victory for the Hokies.

Miami, who was fresh off of a 5-2 win at No. 8 Virginia on Friday, had 5 of their 6 starters ranked in the ITA Top 125 entering the match, as well as a Top 30 doubles team.

The Hokies will look to keep their momentum going when they head south on Friday for a match with Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
