BLACKSBURG – The 47th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team took down VCU by a score of 6-1 on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg. The Hokies are now 3-0 against in-state opponents this season, with victories over Old Dominion and Radford under their belts as well. Virginia Tech improves to 11-5 on the season while VCU falls to 9-8.

VCU claimed the first match of the day with a doubles victory on court 1, but Tech went on a run after that and never looked back. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar took their match with VCU’s Ludivine Burguiere and Alzbeta Veverkova by an 8-6 count on court 3, setting up a decisive match on court 2. There, Caroline Daxhelet and Francesca Fusinato defeated Darya Berezhnaya and Ana Batiri to claim the point for the Hokies, also by a score of 8-6.

Katherine Butler won in singles for the second match in a row, this time beating Veverkova 6-3, 6-3 to give Tech a 2-0 lead. Ilinca Stoica fell in three sets against a worthy opponent in VCU’s No. 52-ranked Cindy Chala, but managed to take the first set in impressive fashion, 6-1. From there, the Hokies did not lose another match.

Cerezo-Codina came off court 3 with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Burguiere, followed by a hard fought 7-5, 7-6 (2) match-clinching victory for Raluca Mita on court 4 over Berezhnaya. With the victory in the bag, the Hokies didn’t let off the gas pedal; Fusinato defeated Salome Kvitashvili (7-5, 7-5) on court 2 while Nandakumar bested Batiri (2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) on court 5.

Virginia Tech will hit the courts at 10 a.m. tomorrow for an ACC challenge against Miami in Blacksburg.
