BLACKSBURG – The No. 47-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will host two matches at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg over the weekend. The Hokies will battle in-state opponent VCU at noon on Saturday, followed by an ACC match with Miami at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Tech (10-5, 3-4 ACC) is coming off their third conference win of the year at Pittsburgh on Sunday. After dropping the doubles point, the Hokies stormed back to win five of six singles matches and take the victory. Francesca Fusinato, Caroline Daxhelet, Elena Cerezo-Codina, Raluca Mita and Katherine Butler all picked up wins on the day.
Fusinato remains ranked No. 86 in this week’s ITA poll, while Ilinca Stoica finds her way back into the rankings as well at No. 106.
VCU (9-7, 0-0 A-10) is hitting the court for the first time since a 5-2 win at Winthrop on March 12th. The Rams are led by No. 52-ranked Cindy Chala and are looking to knockoff an ACC opponent for the first time this season (they are 0-3).
The 16th-ranked Hurricanes (9-3, 6-0 ACC) have won seven of their last eight matches and have yet to lose a conference match. Miami has 5 players ranked in the ITA Top 125, including the No. 6 overall player in the nation, Stephanie Wagner. Most recently, they took down N.C. State at home on March 20th by a score of 6-1. The Canes will make a stop in Charlottesville to take on No. 8 Virginia on Friday before making the trip down I-81 to Blacksburg on Sunday.
