No. 42 Hokies roll past Pittsburgh, 5-2
Tech victorious in five of six singles matches

PITTSBURGH – The 42nd-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated conference foe Pittsburgh on the road on Sunday by a score of 5-2. The Hokies are now 10-5 on the year (3-4 ACC), while Pittsburgh falls to 2-10 (0-7 ACC).

The afternoon began with the Panthers taking the doubles point after a pair of wins coming on courts 2 and 3.

Raluca Mita finished first in singles and tied the match up, scoring the first point of the day for Tech with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Pitt’s Amanda Wickman on court 5. The Panthers retook the lead with a win on court 1, but the Hokies never looked back after that. On court 4, Elena Cerezo-Codina made the score 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Amber Washington.

No. 86 Francesca Fusinato stayed hot and picked up her fourth singles win in a row, this time over Audrey Ann Blakely (6-3, 7-5) to give Tech a 3-2 advantage. Caroline Daxhelet then sealed the deal for Tech with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Callie Frey on court 3 for the match-clinching fourth point.

Katherine Butler also had a strong performance, winning her match on court 6 with Katherine Castro in three sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-0) to give Tech its fifth and final point.

The Hokies return to the court on Saturday with a 12 p.m. home match with in-state opponent VCU.
