BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team picked up its second home ACC victory of the weekend and season Sunday, defeating No. 50 Wake Forest by a score of 6-1. Tech improves to 9-4 (2-3 ACC) while Wake falls to 9-6 (0-4 ACC).

Doubles play began with a Tech loss on court 2, but Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita battled back to earn an 8-7 (1) win over Wake’s Xue Zhang and Andrea Retolaza to set up a decisive match on court 3. There, the No. 52-ranked team of Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar took care of Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez 8-5 to secure the doubles point for the Hokies.

From there, the Hokies never looked back. No. 81 Ilinca Stoica finished first on court 1, knocking off No. 100 Kimmy Guerin 6-3, 6-1. Fusinato was not far behind on court 2, finishing off Wake’s Zhang 6-3, 6-2 to put Tech within one point of clinching victory. Kelly Williford finished the Demon Deacons off, cruising through her second set with Retolaza and winning 7-6, 6-0 on court 4 to solidify the victory for Tech.

Singles matches continued as Cerezo-Codina kept Tech rolling along with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Asch on court 3 to put the Hokies up 5-0. Katherine Butler followed with a tiebreaker win by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (7) on court 6 over Kasey Gardiner. Mita battled down to the wire in her match on court 5, but fell in the third set to keep the Hokies a point away from the sweep.

The Hokies return to action on Friday with another ACC match with Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA. From there, Tech will travel to Pittsburgh for a Sunday tilt with the Panthers.
