BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team racked up its first ACC win of the season by defeating the No. 57-ranked Florida State Seminoles by a score of 4-2 on Saturday in Blacksburg. Tech moves to 8-4 (1-3 ACC) on the year while the Seminoles fall to 6-4 (1-2 ACC).

Tech struck first in doubles play as the No. 52-ranked duo of Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar took out the Seminoles’ Yukako Noi and Lana Rush on court 3 by a score of 8-5. It was the teams fourth win of the season and first since the Marshall match on February 22^nd. Court 2 action ended in a Hokie loss (4-8), which set up Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita’s battle on court 1 as the decisive match for the doubles point. FSU’s Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright prevailed, however, clinching the point by a score of 8-6.

Singles play began with Fusinato quickly defeating No. 73 Cartwright of FSU 6-1, 6-0 on court 2. This evened the match at 1-1 before No. 104 Caroline Daxhelet put the Hokies up by a point with a 6-4, 6-2 win against FSU’s Gabriella Castaneda. No. 81 Ilinca Stoica dropped her match to Daneika Borthwick 7-6, 6-1 on court 1 to even the score at two apiece. Williford responded for Tech with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Emily Fanning to put the Hokies one win away from a team victory with two matches remaining. Nandakumar and Cerezo-Codina were both winning in their third sets, but Cerezo-Codina finished her match first, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 over No. 83 Yukako Noi to clinch the victory for Tech.

The Hokies wrap up the weekend with another home ACC match on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Wake Forest.
