No. 41 Hokies come up short against No. 23 Blue Devils
Fusinato, Cerezo-Codina defeat ranked opponents

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team dropped an ACC match to No. 23 Duke in Durham on Friday by a score of 5-2. Francesca Fusinato and Elena Cerezo-Codina defeated ranked opponents in their singles matches.

Doubles play began on a high note for Tech as Fusinato and Raluca Mita knocked off Duke’s Alyssa Smith and Ester Goldfeld 8-4 on court 1. The duo’s win is number six on the season, which leads the team. No. 52 Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar dropped their first match of the season to Annie Mulholland and Samantha Harris on court 3, setting up a deciding match on court 2. Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford were also shooting for their sixth win on the season, but fell to the Blue Devils’ Beatrice Capra and Rachel Kahan in a close match by a score of 8-6, giving Duke the point.

Tech earned its two points in impressive fashion. Cerezo-Codina beat Duke’s No. 86 Rachel Kahan 6-3, 6-3 for the Hokies first point. Tech would drop matches on courts 1, 3, and 6 to allow Duke to clinch the match. However, another bright spot came for the Hokies when Fusinato took down No. 51 Ester Goldfeld 6-3, 3-6, 4-2 on court 2.

The Hokies will look to pull off an upset of the nation’s top ranked team, UNC, at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Chapel Hill. You can follow the live stats at the link below.
