BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 41 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will spend the weekend in North Carolina as conference play begins to pick up for the Hokies. Tech will face No. 23 Duke in Durham at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. tilt with No. 1 UNC on Sunday in Chapel Hill.
Duke has lost five consecutive matches coming into the weekend against some of the nation’s top competition, most recently Florida and Stanford. It enters at 4-5 on the season, but still holds the No. 23 spot in the country. The Blue Devils have three players ranked in the ITA top 100, including Ester Goldfed, Rachel Kahan and Samantha Harris.
The Tar Heels are as good as advertised, coming into the weekend with a No. 1 ranking and their first 11-0 start in over 16 years. As of Sunday, all six UNC starters are ranked, including three in the top 20. North Carolina is led by No. 8 Jamie Loeb, as well as No. 15 Caroline Price and No.19 Hayley Carter. The Heels most recently took down No. 15 Michigan by a score of 5-2 in Ann Arbor on Sunday after sweeping NC State 7-0 on Friday.
The Hokies are coming off of a convincing 6-1 victory over No. 73 Marshall on Sunday in Blacksburg. The Hokies were perfect in doubles play and took five of six singles matches on the day. Caroline Daxhelet continues to impress as she moved to 6-0 on the season in dual play over the weekend. No. 81 Ilinca Stoica is beginning to heat up as well as she enters the weekend on a three-game win streak. Tech will look to stay hot in doubles play as well, where they’ve racked up a 16-6 record as a team on the season.
The Hokies moved up 9 sports in the national rankings to No. 41 after this past weekend’s matches. In addition, two Tech players entered the rankings for the first time this season as Daxhelet claims No. 104 and Stoica comes in at No. 81. The doubles duo of Sansitha Nandakumar and Elena Cerezo-Codina also broke the rankings this week, coming in at No. 52.
