No. 50 Hokies unable to get by No. 14 Clemson, 5-2

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 50 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell at No. 14 Clemson, 5-2, at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center Friday afternoon. Ilinca Stoica and Caroline Daxhelet picked up singles wins for the Hokies.

Tech battled for the doubles point as Daxhelet and Kelly Williford picked up an 8-6 win over No. 59 Romy Köelzer/Trisen Dewer at the No. 2 spot, but Clemson came away with the early point.

Stoica evened the match by picking up the first singles point. She defeated No. 35 Köelzer, 6-4, 6-1, to even the match from the top spot. Tech dropped the next two points from the No. 2 and 3 spots to go down 3-1, but Daxhelet kept the Hokies alive when she picked up a three-set win. Daxhelet defeated No. 75 Jessy Rompies 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on court four. Dewer went on to clinch the match for the Tigers at No. 5, defeating Williford 6-0, 6-3.

The Hokies return home to finish up the weekend, hosting No. 73 Marshall on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
