BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 50 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend, splitting play on the road and at home. After nearly two weeks off, the Hokies will head to South Carolina to face No. 14 Clemson on Friday afternoon to begin the weekend. Tech will return home Sunday, Feb. 22 to host No. 73 Marshall at 1 p.m.
Clemson is coming off of a tough, 4-3 loss at No. 6 Baylor over the weekend. Senior Jessy Rompies earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the second time this spring after she won both of her matches over the weekend. Rompies is one of four Tigers that are ranked individually, while she and teammate Beatrice Gumulya make up the No. 1 double team in the nation. Joana Eidukonyte (No. 23), Romy Köelzer (No. 35) and Gumulya (No. 119) round out Clemson’s ranked individuals. Eidukonyte and Köelzer are also members of top-60 doubles pairings.
Marshall enters the weekend at 5-2 on the season and will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, to take on Liberty before arriving in Blacksburg on Sunday. The Herd is coming off of a pair of victories over top-75 opponents, most recently topping No. 72 Minnesota 4-3 last weekend in Huntington. Derya Turhan is 4-2 from the No. 1 spot for far this season for Marshall, while Maddie Silver has seen success at No. 2 with a 5-1 record so far.
The Hokies are coming off of a pair of home wins after knocking off Old Dominion two weeks ago, and later rounded out the weekend with a win over Coastal Carolina. Katherine Butler and Caroline Daxhelet are currently on four-match win streaks in dual play, while Francesca Fusinato boasts a 3-1 record playing on both the No. 1 and 2 spots.
