No. 50 Tech takes down Coastal Carolina, 6-1
Hokies move to 5-1 on the season

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 50th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team recorded its fifth win of the Spring season with a 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Sunday in Blacksburg. The Hokies are now 5-1, while Coastal drops to 1-3 on the year.

The 36th-ranked team of Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita kicked things off for Tech in doubles play with a 6-2 victory on court 1 over Coastal’s Romane Delay and Libby Scott. Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford followed them up and clinched the doubles point with a win over Sara Bondar and Honami Yazawa on court 2, also by a score of 6-2. Junior Mariana Silva saw her first action of the Spring season for the Hokies, teaming up with Katherine Butler on court 3 against Cary Berry and Natalie Wall. Though the point had already been clinched, the match was played out, ending in a 6-4 Hokie victory.

Tech had another impressive afternoon in singles play as well, winning five of its six matches. Fusinato, who came off the court first in doubles, kept up her quick pace by taking care of Honami Yazawa on court 2 (6-0, 6-1) for the first singles point of the day. Ilinca Stoica wasn’t far behind on court 2, recording Tech’s third total point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Chanticleers’ Libby Scott. Mita clinched the victory for the Hokies, topping Mila Majtan (6-2, 6-3) on court 5 to make the score 4-0.

Over on court 6, Butler got herself another win in a 6-1, 6-4 tilt with Coastal’s Bondar, giving Tech its fifth point of the afternoon. The final two matches of the day both went into three sets, with both Tech and Coastal claiming a victory. Williford secured a win on court 4 over Berry (2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4)) while Cerezo-Codina fell in a close battle with Coastal’s Delay (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6)) on court 6 to spoil the perfect day for the Hokies.

Tech had originally been slated to take on Morgan State on Sunday afternoon as the second half of a doubleheader, but the match has been cancelled and has not been rescheduled.
