BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team won its match over Old Dominion by a score of 5-2 on Friday at the Burrows-Burrleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg. The Hokies improve to 4-1 on the season with the victory.

The afternoon began with doubles play, with Tech duo Elena Cerezo-Codina and Ilinca Stoica coming off the court first with a 6-1 victory over Old Dominion’s Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic. The 36^th-ranked team of Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita followed with a 6-3 win over Nikol Hristova and Borislava Botusharova on court 1. Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford were winning their match with the Monarch’s Adriana Rajkovic and Ivana Vukovic at 5-3 before the point was clinched.

The Hokies recorded a quick point in singles play after Old Dominion’s Hristova had to forfeit her match with Fusinato due to an injury that she reportedly suffered during her doubles match. The match stood at 2-0 in Fusinato’s favor before it was called. Katherine Butler completed the first full singles match of the day with a win over Vukovic in two sets (6-1, 6-1) on court 6. The victory for Tech was clinched when Cerezo-Codina took down Rajkovic (6-3, 6-2) on court 3 for the Hokies’ fourth point.

Singles play continued with newcomer Daxhelet taking down Vojcinakova (6-3. 6-3) on court 4, followed by Mita dropping a tough match to Novakovic on court 5 (6-3, 6-4). The day ended with the afternoon’s only three-set match, a hard fought tilt that ended with Stoica falling to Botusharova on court 1 (6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (8)).

Tech will have Saturday off before welcoming Coastal Carolina and Morgan State to town for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m., on Sunday.
