BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team kicked off their Spring season on Sunday by defeating both Radford and Davidson at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center by scores of 7-0 and 6-1, respectively.
The Hokies began the doubleheader by winning all three doubles matches against Radford. The #36 nationally ranked duo of Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita beat Radford’s Gemma Valls and Taylor Newman by a score of 6-3. Newcomer Caroline Daxhelet and Kelly Williford won their match versus Natalie Sayer and Taylor Fay to clinch the doubles point for the Hokies, while Katherine Butler and Sansitha Nandakumar were up 5-3 before their match was ended.
Singles play began with Daxhelet defeating Fay (6-0, 6-0) followed by Elena Cerezo-Codina, who is ranked 17th in the Atlantic Region, taking down Newman 6-1, 6-0. Fusinato, now ranked 4th in the region, won her match over Natalie Sayer (6-3, 6-1) while Butler defeated Grace Sarver (6-4, 6-1). To round out the first half of the doubleheader, Nandakumar took care of Meg Napolitano by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Davidson won the doubles point to start off the second half of the doubleheader, but Cerezo-Codina and Nandakumar did win their match 6-3 over Sarah Stein and Ava Todd of Davidson.
Tech was perfect again in singles play against Davidson, beginning with Butler taking down Ally Sexton 6-0, 6-2. Mita followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Todd while Ilinca Stoica, now ranked 6th in the Atlantic Region, beat Elaina Cummer 6-2, 6-3. Daxheret beat Jenna Brunner 6-4, 6-0 followed by Cerezo-Codina beating Anna Catharine Feaster 6-3, 6-2. Williford kept the Hokies perfect on the day in singles, finishing the day with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Stein.
The Hokies will be back in action against Princeton in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday, January 24th at 2 p.m.
