BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 57 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will open the 2015 season Sunday with a pair of matches at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech will take on Radford at 10:30 a.m. and later face Davidson at 3:30 p.m.
The Hokies return all of their top players from last season and enter the year with two nationally ranked doubles teams. Junior Raluca Mita appears on both ranked pairings, sitting at 36 when playing with sophomore Francesca Fusinato, and 50 when teaming with classmate Ilinca Stoica.
Stoica and Fusinato occupied the top two spots for the Hokies last season and will start the season ranking 4th and 6th, respectively, in the Atlantic Region. Newcomer Elena Cerezo-Codina enters her collegiate debut as the No. 17 player in the Atlantic Region.
Stoica had an impressive and historic fall for the Hokies as she advanced the to finals of the ITA Atlantic Regional and became the first player in Tech history to earn a bid to nationals. She also worked her way to the doubles semifinals of Regional, teaming up with Mita.
This will be the first match of the year for Radford, as it is coming off of a 10-13 record a year ago, going 4-5 on Big South play. The Hokies and Highlanders already met this academic year as the Highlanders made the short trip to Blacksburg during the fall season for the Hokie Fall Invite and the ITA Atlantic Regional. Natalie Sayer was the top performer for Radford during the Regional, advancing to the round of 32.
It’s all about new beginnings for Davidson in 2015 as they squad is under new direction this year and is now a members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Wildcats finished last season with a 7-18 record, 2-7 in the Southern Conference. This is the third straight season that the Hokies and Wildcats have opened up against one another.
