BLACKSBURG, Va. – Tech junior Ilinca Stoica has earned a spot to join the nation’s top competition at the 2014 USTA/National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, New York this Thursday, Nov. 6 through Sunday, Nov. 9.
Stoica will face the tournament’s No. 4 seed, Florida’s Brooke Austin, on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. If victorious, she will move on to compete against the winner of Texas A&M’s Saska Gavrilovska and Columbia’s Kanika Vaidya’s match in the next round.
Stoica will arrive in New York ranked 64th in the ITA Women’s Singles rankings. She looks to build on the success she had in the Hokie Fall Invitational, where she played her way into the semifinals in singles play before dropping a close championship match to ITA’s No. 32 ranked Stephanie Nauta of Virginia.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall college tennis season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for both men and women. This is the fifth consecutive year the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be held at the home of the US Open.
