Tech impresses on first day of USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational
Five Hokies record singles victories; doubles teams go two for three

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team started their weekend in Orlando out on a high note, winning seven of nine total matches in singles and doubles play on Thursday.

In singles, Francesca Fusinato topped Columbia’s Rima Asatrian (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) and Elena Cerezo-Codina took down Melissa Kopinski of Illinois (2-6. 6-1. 6-4) in the A draw. In the B draw, Sansitha Nandakumar beat Columbia’s Alexandra Soloyvev in two sets (7-5, 6-4) while Raluca Mita cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Adi Milstein, also of Columbia. The C draw brought another win for Tech with Katherine Butler defeated Florida State’s Daniella Schippers by a score of 6-4, 6-4. The last remaining Hokie, Kelly Williford, dropped a tough one to Stetson’s Eveline Lepinay in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).

Fusinato and Mita kicked off Tech’s day in doubles with an early morning 8-6 victory over Burak/Lakova from Youngstown State. Cerezo-Codina and Nandakumar edged out a 8-7 (5) victory over Stetson’s Ferandez/Lepinay, while Williford and Butler couldn’t get past the C draw’s No. 2 seeded duo of Schippers/Noi from Florida State, dropping the match in an 8-2 decision.

The tournament will continue early Friday, with Nandakumar and Fusinato both slated to play second round singles matches at 8 a.m. Butler will follow with an 8:30 match, rounded out by Nandakumar and Mita playing at 9:30. Another round of singles matches will be played after those, with doubles second round matches to follow in the afternoon.
