BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional concluded on Tuesday with two doubles semifinals matches and a much anticipated singles championship match between the tournament’s top two seeds, Tech’s (2) Ilinca Stoica and (1) Virginia’s Stephanie Nauta. Stoica fought hard, but came up short in the first set, losing in the tiebreaker by a score of 7-6 (5). Nauta took the second set 6-2 to solidify herself as champion.
In doubles play, Stoica and teammate Raluca Mita fell to Virginia’s Cassie Mercer and Skylar Morton in two sets, 6-3 and 6-3. The other semifinal featured Virginia’s Maci Epstein and Nauta taking down VCU in two sets. Tournament rules prohibit matchups featuring two teams from the same school, so both Virginia teams placed first in doubles.
Tuesday marked the first day of the five-day tournament in which Stoica recorded a loss in either singles or doubles play, finishing with a 5-1 individual record and a 3-1 record with Mita in doubles.
The Hokies will not return to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center until 2015, but will send representatives to the USTA Clay Court Championships in Orlando at the end of the month and the Kitty Harrison Invite in Chapel Hill in November to round out the Fall season.
