BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech's Ilinca Stoica has advanced to the finals of the ITA Atlantic Regional after defeating Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova in Monday’s semifinal by a score of 7-6 (7), 6-4. No. 2 seeded Stoica will take on the tournament’s top seed, Stephanie Nauta of Virginia, in Tuesday’s championship match for singles play.
Earlier in the day, Stoica topped Virginia’s Skylar Morton in the tournament’s quarterfinals with no trouble, winning in two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Stoica’s success has not been limited to singles play, however, as she will be joined by teammate Raluca Mita to take on Virginia’s Cassie Mercer and Morton on Tuesday in a doubles semifinal. The Hokies earned their spot by eliminating George Washington’s Grace Egger and Tedora Radosavljevic in a close match, winning in the tiebreaker by a score of 8-7 (5).
Tuesday will mark the last day of the Regional in Blacksburg, beginning at 10 a.m. with the semifinals in doubles play. In addition to Stoica/Mita’s matchup with Virginia, the Cavaliers will also send their duo of Nauta and Maci Epstein to the court to face VCU’s Salome Kvitashvili and Olga Barsheuskaya in the other semifinal match.
Stoica’s bid for a singles championship will take place after the doubles semifinals, and that match will be followed by the doubles championship. Continue to check back here or follow us on Twitter for updates.
