No. 64 Tech tops No. 44 Boston College

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech’s 64th-ranked women’s tennis team defeated 44th-ranked Boston College 6-1 on Sunday morning at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies kicked things off with a win of the doubles point. Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita defeated Jennifer Ren and Heini Salonen 8-4 for the first win of the day at No. 2. Freshmen Francesca Fusinato and Sansitha Nandakumar teamed up to clinch the point with their 8-5 victory over Katya Vasilyev and Wan-Yi Sweeting at No. 3.

Boston College evened the match with the first singles win of the day, but Vasilyev’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Kelly Williford at No. 2 would be the Eagles’ only point of the match.

Fusinato, ranked No. 96, won three games in a row to end the second set and win 6-4, 6-3 over Lexi Borr at No. 3. Nandakumar dropped her first set 2-6, but came back with a vengeance to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 over Emily Safron in the No. 6 slot.

Ilinca Stoica won the Hokies’ second three-setter of the day as she clinched Tech’s victory with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Jessica Wacnik at No. 1. Mita continued Tech’s effort as she fought back to defeat Salonen 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4.

Senior Isel Martinez-Marcos rounded out the day for the Hokies. After dropping the second set tie-break 9-7, Martinez-Marcos won the third set 6-4 to take the No. 5 match 6-3, 6 (7)-7, 6-4 over Ren on senior day.

The Hokies return to action next weekend as they travel to Miami on Friday and Florida State on Sunday for their last regular season matches of the season.
