No. 64 Hokies fall to No. 26 Irish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The 64th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to No. 26 Notre Dame 7-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Hokies (11-10, 3-8 ACC) took the No. 2 doubles match as seniors Isel Martinez-Marcos and Tea Ivanovic teamed up to top Julie Sabacinski and Jennifer Kellner 8-4.

Notre Dame (13-8, 6-6 ACC) tallied wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to claim the point, though. Quinn Gleason and Britney Sanders, ranked No. 11, defeated Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita 8-3 in the No. 1 slot, and Mary Closs and Molly O’Koniewski added a win over Rebecca Harris and Kelly Williford 8-4 at No. 3.

The Irish continued their campaign in singles. O’Koniewski topped Ivanovic 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, and her doubles partner Closs won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 over Kahoun. Monica Robinson added a 6-0, 6-1 win over Martinez-Marcos at No. 4. Kellner’s win over Nandakumar 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 gave the Irish their fourth singles point of the day.

Mita was defeated by No. 42 Gleason 6-3, 7-6 (6) at No. 2. Williford pushed Sanders to a third set but fell 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).

The Hokies return to action for their final home match of the season as they host Boston College at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
