No. 69 Hokies fall to No. 13 Cavaliers

CARY, N.C. -- The No. 69 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the No. 13 Virginia Cavaliers 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.

The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point to start the day. At No. 3, Li Xi and Maria Fucillo defeated Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez-Marcos 8-1. The doubles point was decided when Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita fell to Julia Elbaba and Hana Tomljanovic 8-3 at No. 2.

Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford were square with Stephanie Nauta and Erin Vierra at 5-5 and did not finish once the doubles point was decided.

Virginia added to the lead with Vierra’s win over Kahoun 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. However, the Hokies bounced back as Ivanovic dominated 6-0, 6-1 over Caryssa Peretz at No. 6.

Williford evened the score at two with her second three-set victory of the tournament, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, over Xi at No. 4. Mita gave the Hokies their first lead of the day with her upset of No. 73 Nauta 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2.

Virginia quickly evened the score, though, as Tomljanovic topped Martinez-Marcos 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3.

The match came down to a third set at No. 1 singles with No. 12 Elbaba ultimately defeating No. 125 Stoica 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 to give Virginia the 4-3 victory.

The Hokies end their ACC Championship run in the quarterfinals with a 14-12, 3-10 ACC record. Tech will now wait to see if an NCAA tournament bid is in their future.
