No. 69 Hokies upset No. 14 Duke

CARY, N.C. -- The No. 69 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated the No. 14 Duke Blue Devils 4-3 Thursday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.

The Hokies, seeded 11th, grabbed the doubles point with a win by Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford 9-7 over Hanna Mar and Mary Clayton at No. 1. Duke, seeded 6th, conceded the No. 3 doubles match, giving the Hokies the doubles point.

At No. 2 doubles, Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita fell to Marianna Jodoin and Annie Mulholland 8-4.

The Hokies extended their lead to 2-0 as Duke didn’t field a singles player at No. 6 to take on Tea Ivanovic.

Duke cut the Tech lead to one as No. 109 Clayton defeated Mita 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

The Hokies rallied, though to score a third point with Kahoun’s win over Nicole Lipp 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

However, Duke was quick to even the score at three. No. 27 Mar defeated No. 125 Stoica 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and was quickly followed by Mulholland’s 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Isel Martinez-Marcos at No. 3.

The match decision came at No. 4 singles as Williford defeated No. 119 Marianne Jodoin 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

With the win, the Hokies advanced to the second round of the ACC Championship. Tech will take on three-seed Virginia on Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Park.
