BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team has been selected for the tenth time as the recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award. Additionally, the Hokies had six players named 2011 ITA Scholar-Athletes. Shannon Betts, Martha Blakely, Yasmin Hamza, Tea Ivanovic, Emily Lauten and Courtney Rauscher were selected for the honor.

The Hokies previously received the team award in 1997-2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Tech led all ACC schools with six players selected as scholar-athletes. Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) received the honor for the third time in her career, while Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga) and Rauscher (Jr., Evans, Ga.) are two-time winners of the honor. Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.), Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) and Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) are first-time recipients.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2010 and spring 2011).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
