BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team received a No. 58 national ranking as released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Hokies also were ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region.
Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) is ranked No. 89 nationally in singles and fifth in the Atlantic Region. Hamza, an All-ACC selection and the Atlantic Region and ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recipient for the Atlantic Region, played at the top of the lineup for most of the dual match season. She won 21 singles matches this year, including an upset of then No. 15 Zoe De Bruycker (North Carolina).
Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.), who led the team with 22 singles victories, is ranked No. 21 in the Atlantic Region. Blakely recently was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American District III At-large University Division team and was the 2010 Skelton Award winner, given to the top Virginia Tech female scholar-athlete.
In doubles, Hamza and Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) are ranked No. 39 nationally and seventh in the Atlantic Region.
