BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 73 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team earned their seventh win over South Alabama, shutting the Jaguars out, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech swept the singles and doubles competition to improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Jaguars fell to 1-4.
Martha Blakely (Reading, Pa.) squeaked out the 7-5, 7-5 victory in the No. 1 match that ultimately gave the Hokies the victory. Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) captured the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marie Boura, while Yasmin Hamza (Cairo, Egypt) earned a win in the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-1, over South Alabama’s Jess Courtnell. Shannon Betts (Newnan, Ga.) added a fourth win in the No. 4 match, 6-1, 7-5.
The Hokies won two singles and two doubles matches by default due to a small South Alabama roster. Courtney Rauscher (Evans, Ga.) and Emily Lauten (Marietta, Ga.) were the default winners of the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively. Blakely/Lauten won by default in the No. 3 doubles match.
Betts and Newman took the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-5 over Welch/Hines, while Hamza/Holly Johnson coupled that with an 8-3 victory over Boura/Courtnell in the No. 2 slot.
