Journey with U-20 National Team continues for McGlynn

Tech's Mandy McGlynn attends tune-up camp before World Cup qualifier

BLACKSBURG – The 2018 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship – the level’s World Cup qualifying tournament – will feature eight nations and is scheduled to run from Jan. 18-28 in Trinidad and Tobago. The US Women’s National Team began its final preparations for the tournament with a training camp in Sarasota, Florida that started yesterday and runs through Jan. 6 and Virginia Tech’s rising junior Mandy McGlynn was one of the players invited to this final camp.

“We’re excited for Mandy to be called back into camp once again,” Tech’s women’s soccer head coach Chugger Adair said. “It’s a testament to her and the work that she’s been putting in throughout her career and her time at Tech. It’s great to see the overall work she continues to do for herself and the team pay off in such a tremendous way.

“We’re excited she’s back with the team and I’ve heard a lot of positive things about her play at the national level. We’re looking for continuing success for her and we wish her the best of luck in this next phase.”

McGlynn, a goalkeeper for the Hokies, has been with the U-20 squad on three other occasions with the most recent one a weeklong event in Lakewood Ranch, Florida for the 2017 Women’s Nike International Friendlies.

In the third match of the tournament, McGlynn earned a start in goal and faced 11 shots in the contest against Brazil. The US team, however, dropped the game 2-0, as Brazil converted a penalty kick in the first half and scored on a counter attack in the second half as the US was pushing for an equalizing goal.

France will host the 16-team 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in four cities in the Brittany region in the summer of 2018. More than half of the field is set, as England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain join France from Europe; Japan, Korea DPR and China PR from Asia; and Oceania qualifier New Zealand. Along with the three CONCACAF berths, there are still two berths from Africa and two from South America up for grabs.

The US team will announce its final roster for the CONCACAF championship shortly after the current camp concludes.
