BLACKSBURG – The No. 25-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five, as the Hokies played No. 14 Notre Dame to a 0-0 double-overtime draw on Thursday afternoon, at Thompson Field.

The stat line speaks for itself, as both squads battled for possession in a back-and-forth affair. Notre Dame (10-2-4, 5-1-2) finished with a 13-12 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Redshirt junior Blayne Fink made five saves on the day for the team’s sixth shutout of the season. Of note, Fink marked her second start as a Hokie, as freshman Mandy McGlynn is currently in Northern Ireland competing for the US Soccer U-18 team. Notre Dame’s senior goalkeeper Kaela Little also made six saves this afternoon.

Senior forward Murielle Tiernan and freshmen Lilly Weber and Bridget Patch paced the field with two shots each, with Patch landing two on-frame.

Although there were not many legitimate opportunities in the full 110 minutes of play, the Hokies (10-4-3, 2-3-3) best chance came in the 44th minute. Patch broke away down the middle of the pitch, sailing an on-point shot toward the net, but Little was there to make the save. Tiernan also had a shot just high of the cross bar in the 20th minute.

“We were solid defensively, and we played well. I think we played well with one another. We supported one another, one was stepping and the other one was covering. We were really just helping one another out. We didn’t leave anybody out to dry. It was a good defending team for the most part. That is a pretty offensively built Notre Dame team, so we did a good job.”

“Blayne has been great. Her attitude has been great. When she hasn’t been playing, she’s been a great member of the team. She is a positive person, and now is her opportunity. She’s stepping up, and she’s done a good job. She’s been solid, and we are happy with that.”

“They (Notre Dame’s defense) were good. They were solid. I thought we had a couple of chances. Patch had that one chance, and she just didn’t hit cleanly. They did a good job, and they have a senior goalkeeper who is pretty experienced. She did a good job as well.”

The Hokies are 2-3-1 all-time against the Fighting Irish … The last time Tech defeated Notre Dame was during the 2013 season, picking up a 2-1 double-overtime victory on Nov. 3, in Blacksburg … Tech is 7-0-1 when scoring two or more goals this season … With today’s appearance, Tiernan is now tied for 10th all-time in games played with 85 matches … Tiernan (8 G) owns a team-best eight goals, pacing the team with 16 points, followed by Johnson with 12 points (6 G).

Tech travels to Coral Gables, Florida, on Sunday, Oct. 23, for their final road game of the regular season, as the Hokies square off against the Hurricanes in an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) showdown. First kick from Cobb Stadium is set for 12 p.m.
