BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Former Virginia Tech soccer player Kelly Conheeney has made the opening day roster for Sky Blue FC, a team from New Jersey competing in the National Women’s Soccer League, the top league in the United States.
Conheeney, a native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, made the roster after originally coming through open trials. Sky Blue FC plays out of Piscataway, New Jersey. The team opens the 2016season on Sunday, April 17, as they travel to the Northwest to take on the Seattle Reign. Conheeney will wear number 24 for Sky Blue FC.
Conheeney, who was a fifth-year senior on the Hokies’ 2013 national semifinalist team, missed most of her last two seasons in Blacksburg due to post-concussion symptoms. During her Virginia Tech career, Conheeney scored 26 goals and recorded 23 assists, for 75 points, second-best in school history. Her 26 goals are sixth-best in school history, her 23 assists is second in school history. Her 14 career game-winning goals are also second-best in school history and her 12 assists in the 2010 season are the best in Virginia Tech women’s soccer history.
