NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fifth-ranked Virginia Tech lost at 14^th-ranked Notre Dame, 3-0, in ACC women’s soccer action on Friday night. With the loss, the Hokies fall to 14-3-2 overall and 6-3-1 in conference play, while Notre Dame improves to 13-4-1 overall and 6-4 in the ACC.

“I was disappointed in the result tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “It was a tough road match against a very good Notre Dame team. I think we did a good job getting to halftime tied 0-0.

“We played a little bit more conservative in the first half. In the second half, the game opened up a bit, which was good for us. I think we got into the attack and got more numbers forward and had some good opportunities, but didn’t capitalize on those, unfortunately.”

The match was a scoreless tie going into the intermission and continued as such well into the second half. Late in the match, Notre Dame scored a pair of goals in a span of 19 seconds to take the lead. The first was a goal in the 73^rd minute from Ginny McGowan, assisted by Brittany von Rueden. Then, less than a half minute later, Anna Gilbertson scored on a free kick to give the Irish a 2-0 lead.

The Hokies tried to rally to no avail. In the waning seconds of the match, Gilbertson netted her second goal of the evening and Notre Dame took the 3-0 victory.

“Notre Dame scored a good first goal,” Adair added. “But then, less than a minute later, we gave up a bad free kick, on which Notre Dame, unfortunately capitalized. That second goal really hurt us as we were chasing the game. It made it difficult for us to come back. “

The Irish out shot the Hokies, 21-9, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half. Kaylyn Smith went the distance in goal for the Hokies and recorded a career-high 10 saves in the match.

The Hokies must now wait for the outcome of three other ACC matches this weekend to learn their fate for next weekend’s ACC Tournament in Cary, North Carolina. Only the top four teams advance to the tournament. The field for the tournament will be announced Sunday evening, Nov. 1, following the conclusion of the Boston College at Florida State match.
