Virginia Tech at Georgetown Match Notes

Virginia Tech concludes the non-conference portion of the 2015 schedule, as they travel to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown. The match begins at 1 p.m. at Shaw Field on the GU campus.

The Hokies enter the match 7-0-1 overall ... Georgetown is 4-2 on the season ... Tech is ranked 12th in the NCSAA poll and ninth in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll.

Last Time Out: VT 2, Davidson 1

The Hokies returned to Thompson Field on Thursday night with a 2-1 victory over Davidson ... Ashley Meier put the Hokies up for good in the 74th minute, on a header off a cross from Kallie Peurifoy ... Laila Gray got Tech’s first goal on a diving header off a cross from Madi Conyers ... The Hokies played without starters Murielle Tiernan and Jordan Coburn, who each missed the contest with minor injuries.

Murielle is the Tops!

Virginia Tech junior forward, Murielle Tiernan, scored Tech’s second goal of the Longwood match and in doing so, recorded her 30th career goal ... She now has 31 career goals ... That puts her alone in first place on the Virginia Tech all-time goals list ... She enters today’s match in second place in career points, with 73, two behind former teammate Kelly Conheeney.

Ashley’s Not Far Behind

Virginia Tech senior midfielder, Ashley Meier, scored her 28th career goal in Tech’s win over Davidson ... That puts her alone in third place on the Virginia Tech all-time goals list ... She enters today’s match in tied with former teammate Shannon Mayrose for fourth place in career points, with 67 ... Meier has 166 career shots, sixth place on Virginia Tech’s all-time list.

The Hokies vs. Georgetown

This is a series that has quickly become one of the best non-conference match-ups in the East ... Georgetown leads the all-time series, 3-2 ... Tech has won the last two meetings, both last season ... The No. 5 Hokies defeated the No. 13 Hoyas, 6-1, in Blacksburg last September and then the No. 14 Hokies downed GU, 4-3 in overtime, in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament at Penn State... Tech lost the only road game in the series, 3-0, in 2001 and is 2-1 against the Hoyas under Chugger Adair ... Tech is 7-16-1 all-time against schools currently in the Big East Conference ... Virginia Tech was a member of the Big East from 2000 through the 2004 soccer season, and was 0-1 against Georgetown in Big East matches ... Tech also lost to Georgetown during that period of time, but did not count towards Big East standings.
