No. 2 Hokies look to extend 10-game winning streak against No. 20 Notre Dame
Another ranked opponent comes to Thompson Field for ACC matchup

BLACKSBURG - No. 20 Notre Dame will play the undefeated second-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team on Thursday night for an ACC clash at Thompson Field. The Hokies will look to continue their success against the battle-tested Irish after beating them in last year’s ACC quarterfinal.

The Hokies enter tomorrow night’s contest having won every game this season to earn a 10-0-0 (1-0-0 ACC) record, the best start and longest winning streak in program history. Notre Dame has also started the year strong, boasting a 5-3-1 (0-1-0 ACC) record against multiple tough opponents. They have already faced No. 19 Illinois, No. 6 Texas Tech, No. 21 USC, No. 4 Stanford and No. 9 North Carolina.

Last Friday, Tech beat No. 17 Clemson 2-0 off of goals from senior Shannon Mayrose and junior Ashley Meier. For the final 40 minutes, Tech played a man down and held the high-scoring Tiger offense to only one shot on goal.

Last Saturday night, Notre Dame hosted No. 9 North Carolina in a double-overtime thriller. The Irish earned a two-goal lead in the opening half, but the Tar Heels mounted a comeback and eventually won after scoring in the first minute of the second overtime.

The two teams became familiar with one another last season, when they played twice, once in the regular season and once in the ACC quarterfinals. Tech won both of those games by one goal, but it was no easy task. In the ACC quarterfinal game, Tech won in double overtime after Jazmine Reeves scored a goal off a corner kick with only 1:13 left before penalty kicks.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field with live video available on HokiesXtra and live stats available online. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free VT Mason Jar.
