Manning, Meier named to NCAA All-Tournament Team
Tech ends season in top five for first time

CARY, N.C. -- Senior Ashley Manning and sophomore Ashley Meier of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team were both named to the 2013 NCAA All-Tournament Team, as announced by the NCAA following the 2013 College Cup.

Manning and Meier each scored a goal for the Hokies in their hard-fought 3-2 loss to Florida State in the national semifinals last Friday evening, while Manning also assisted on Meier’s goal.

In the 31st minute, Manning opened the match’s scoring when she took a through ball and fought off All-American defender Kassey Kallman before slotting home a low shot to put Tech up 1-0.

Meier later tied the match at 2-2 with her goal in the 79th minute. Manning slotted the sophomore into the box, where she took a touch and slid a shot past goalkeeper Kelsey Wys to level things with just over 10 minutes to play.

Despite the loss, the match marked Virginia Tech’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA College Cup. Manning and Meier were also the first Hokies ever named to the All-Tournament Team. The complete 11-member team can be found below.

In rankings released at the end of the 2013 season, the Hokies appeared in the top five of multiple polls. The NSCAA National Top 25 ranked Tech No. 4, where it has been ranked since the end of the ACC Tournament, while the NCAA RPI moved the Hokies up to No. 5 from No. 7. Both rankings are the highest end-of-year rankings in program history.
