Three Hokies named to the 2012 VaSID All-State team
Mitchell, Mayrose and Meier all earn second team honors

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Kelsey Mitchell, junior Shannon Mayrose and freshman Ashley Meier of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team were named to the VaSID All-State team Wednesday morning by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. All three Hokies received second team honors as it marks the sixth-straight year Tech has had a Hokie receive All-State selections.

Mitchell led the Tech defense as she started all 20 games at the centerback position. The Longwood, Fla., native became Tech’s all-time leader in career games played as she started every game in her career. This is her fifth honor this season as she was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week twice (Oct. 29 and Aug. 21), was one of CollegeSoccer360.com’s Primetime Performers of the Week on Oct. 29 and was placed on Wake Forest’s Invitational All-Tournament team.

This season the Hokie defense set school records in single-season shutouts, blanking 12 out of the 20 opponents this season, and the six losses marks the fewest losses in program history.

Mayrose led the team in shots this season and ranked second on the squad in goals, assists and points. The Freehold, N.J., native led both squads in the Hokies’ final contest of the season with four shots and one goal against then-No. 14 Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The forward was a huge factor in the upset over then-No. 7 Wake Forest as she assisted two of the three goals. She finished the season with seven goals, four assists, 64 shots and four game-winners.

This is Meier’s third postseason award as she was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Season Freshman Second Team and All-ACC’s Second Team and All-Freshman Team. The Strongsville, Ohio, native was just the second Hokie freshman to receive All-ACC and All-Freshman honors since Tech joined the conference in 2004. The midfielder led the Hokies in goals and points. Meier found the back of the net eight times, including two game-winners. She finished the season with goals against three nationally ranked opponents.
